La Cafetière, the REAL hot
beverage experts
La Cafetière was the first brand of French-press coffee makers
to be sold in the UK. The Classic Chrome Cafetière, which
has often been voted a ‘Design Icon’ by the housewares
industry, was first launched over 30 years ago and remains a best
seller to this day. The La Cafetière name has subsequently
entered the Oxford English Dictionary as the generic term for French-press
or ‘plunge-filter’ coffee makers!
The last few years has seen La Cafetière further strengthen
its reputation and it remains the only UK company focusing solely
on hot beverages, most notably coffee. The company also works closely
with designers and manufacturers from Italy – the home of ‘real’ coffee – allowing
La Cafetière to expand on its familiar range of coffee-makers.
The company distributes for Bialetti, established since the 1930s
and now the world’s largest manufacturer of stove-top espresso
pots. In addition the Guido Bergna (gB) range of stainless steel
espresso pots and accessories are available together with an electrical
range from De’Longhi, another long-established Italian coffee
specialist.
La Cafetière now offers an unrivalled range of coffee-related
products – from French-press and electrical coffee makers
to espresso pots and frothers. The company intends to expand still
further by continuing to invest heavily in New Products. Check

La Cafetière, The Design Classic
The story behind the initial development of the La Cafetière
design classic has strong roots in Italy, the home of great coffee
drinkers.
The La Cafetière story dates back to 1929 when Attilio
Calimani from Milan registered the patent for his "apparatus
for the preparation of infusions of coffee". This was a pot
featuring a perforated screen on the end of a rod. When the rod
was pressed down in the pot, the screen forced the coffee grounds
to the bottom, and allowed the taste to infuse up into the liquid.
Calimani continued developing his device to allow for the "quick
filtration" of coffee, but the next important stage in the
La Cafetière story came in 1958 when the Italian national
Faliero Bondanini was granted a patent for his modified version
of the plunge-filter coffee pot.
The La Cafetière story took on a more cosmopolitan twist.
While the French, in the 1950s, were the first to really market
the concept it was the British company Household Articles Ltd,
who realised the full potential of the product by introducing the
Classic Chrome design specifically for the UK market. Drawing on
the product's French influences, the coffee maker was marketed
as La Cafetière, and this has remained the UK’s most
widely recognized brand of coffee-makers for over 30 years.
